Is a "Introduce Yourself" thread actually necessary?

I was checking one new forum yesterday and the first thing I saw was “Introduce Yourself Here.” does anybody truly enjoy that thing again? Most people just type “hello i'm new here” and disappear forever. People now prefer entering hot gist immediately instead of formal introductions. Attention span has reduced badly.

I had a craft forum a couple years ago and a couple of members were asking for the Intro forum...well, I didn't want one for the reasons you wrote above! But I finally added one and it didn't increase any activity or generate conversations.
