How do you handle a "ghost town" phase?

That ghost town phase can break a very strong person mentally. You post a topic, refresh the page 20 times, nothing happened. Sometimes I purposely reply my own threads just to make the place look active. Consistency is the only thing that helped me because if you abandon the forum for one week, everywhere would look like abandoned estate. 🤣

I can definitely understand how discouraging it is to have crickets on the forum. I’ve had a few forums in the past and it is inevitable that there are some slow periods and at times just nothing at all.

One really important thing to keep in mind is to not view those quiet periods as failures. Instead, treat them as an opportunity to continue building the foundation of the community. There are many ways to do this such as:

-Lead by example: You should remain active and post regularly

-Create regular traditions (the traditions will depend on your forum niche)

-Welcome every new member personally. New members should feel noticed from the beginning. Whether it’s responding to their introduction thread or sending them a PM personally welcoming them to the forum.

-Respond to members consistently. This will help them feel like their posts matter and will encourage them to post more.

-Build community traditions and identity. (Again, the traditions and identity will depend on your forums niche)

-Introduce new features gradually. Instead of doing it all at once (it may feel overwhelming to members) introduce new features gradually and maybe put a goal that when you hit x amount of members you will implement a new feature.

-Ask members what they need. This will help you find out what they like, what they don’t like, why they are posting or why they are reluctant to post. Feedback is amazing even if you only get a few replies.

The most important thing to remember is to remain patient and consistent. Building a genuine community takes time and when people go quiet one thing I tend to do is send them a PM let them know that there are new threads started that you think they would be interested in and share the link to those posts. That way when they do log in they see that there are some threads that they can get right into.
